Short description of the volunteer’s work:
The volunteer
will work together with the regular staff of the youth centre Marttinen. S/he
will organise international youth courses and meetings and plan the procedure
and programme together with the staff.
The volunteer can also take part in realising camp schools, camps and other
activities organised for Finnish children and youngsters. Camp school is an
event that a school class arranges outside school, but within the school time.
The aim of these kind of camp schools is to strengthen the spirit of the class,
to learn something in a non-formal way and to learn about values such as
friendship, acting together as a group etc.
Camps in general are events taking place during holidays. They usually have a theme, and the aim of a camp can for example be to offer children to train their independence, learn some new skills etc. The special abilities and interests of the volunteer will help to create programmes and activities in the centre. The volunteer can also visit local schools and youth houses etc. to inform about activities of the youth centre and in this way represent European co-operation realised through this programme.
The work at
the youth centre can change quite much depending on the seasons and the
happenings at the youth centre, but here is a suggestion what a normal day
could be like:
Usually the work is teamwork and the volunteer will be together with the staff.
This means that all the programmes will always be planned and lead together
with other people. The volunteer will use his / her personality as a tool when
working with such things.
The working hours will depend on what kind of happenings are going on at the centre. If there are groups visiting or there is some happening to be arranged, the volunteer will be working in shifts. But when there is nothing special going on, the volunteer will be working between 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.
The volunteer
will be working 30-35 hours / week, approx. 6-7 hours / day. The work week
lasts usually from Monday to Friday, but sometimes there might also be work
during the weekend.
